“G-Max Hurricane” – Corviknight VMAX/Bronzong in Standard!

Ola Trainers! As we approach the Player’s Cup 3 and the Team Challenge, we’re finishing up the final tournaments where VIV is the newest expansion. With Battle Styles on the horizon, we’re unlocking all sorts of new cards and combinations, some of which haven’t even been discovered yet. I know I’ve personally enjoyed hearing about other people’s creative ideas, as I’ve been jotting them down while watching Top 10 List videos as well as pack opening clips.

There’s a lot of creativity to be had in this new expansion, but one of the most creative cards in the whole set has to be Bronzong. Being able to move energy cards around the board has been an ability that has been reprinted many times. However, it will always be loved. The last time we saw an ability like this was on Weavile-GX with that Dark Transfer ability, and before that, another example was Klingklang, which won the US National Championships a few years back. Bronzong, being a spiritual avenger of those cards, has been brought into existence alongside its new partner, Corviknight VMAX. The raw power of having a big VMAX Pokémon with lots of HP and damage output is just the bread and butter of Tier 1 at the moment. Today, let’s talk about Corviknight VMAX with Bronzong!

The main strategy with this deck is tried and true but has some flexibility in how you want to get there. Ideally, we want to set up two Corviknight VMAX and a Bronzong to absorb a few hits from the opponent and move all the energy of our damage Pokemon using the Metal Trans ability and then use a Cheryl to heal all of our Pokémon. This is the strategy in an ideal world. However, we can oftentimes function with just a single Corviknight VMAX as it has a whopping 320HP (and with its ability, it can’t be affected by the opponent’s abilities). You can make Corviknight VMAX the ultimate tank with a Coating Metal Energy attached, which renders Fire Pokémon doing natural damage; removing your weakness with an energy card is one of this deck's biggest highlights. Spamming Cheryl repeatedly with Mewtwo and Scoop Up nets is also a unique attribute this deck has over other archetypes, as Cheryl is probably the most potent healing card we’ve seen printed in recent times. Since our deck is Metal-type, we can also use Zacian V as both an attacker, our draw power, and energy acceleration! Intrepid Sword is one of the best abilities in the Standard format right now. We can abuse it by getting extra energy into play and then moving them to Corviknight with Bronzong’s ability. This whole deck meshes very well together and is a bit more methodical in how it plays out but overall very strong if you can’t OHKO a Corviknight VMAX.

3-3 Corviknight VMAX - This titan of a VMAX Pokémon is unique, as it is a Metal-type VMAX with a free retreat cost. Usually, most Metal-types have a very high retreat cost to represent their “weight” in the Pokémon universe, but since Corviknight is a taxi bird, it is naturally very agile! This benefits us very much in many scenarios, as the ability to pivot between attackers is vital to this deck’s strategy.

This 320HP VMAX also shares a unique ability on the same card, which makes it unaffected by the opponent’s abilities. That means no silly games regarding Giratina, Galatian Zigzagoon, or perhaps even a Weepingbell. Since we’re immune to the opponent's abilities, we dodge a lot of surprises the opponent can throw our way! This ability will only gain more value in Expanded and Standard, and more and more cards get printed. This ability is powerful in Standard in one standout scenario: Corviknight is weak to Fire-types, and thus we use Coating Metal Energy to mitigate that. The opponent would normally be able to use Giratina’s ability to remove our special energy, but since we have Corviknight’s lovely ability working for us, we will not be affected.

G-Max Hurricane for (M)(M)(C) is pretty solid since we hit 240. This will KO most V Pokémon and 2HKO all VMAX Pokémon in the format. We can also utilize Capture Energy in our list if we want to satisfy the (C) cost. Much like Zacian V’s Brave Blade, we can’t use this attack on the following turn, but this effect resets if we can move to the bench (or just attack with another Pokémon).

The Corviknight V has niche attacks, mostly in the form of Clutch. Rendering our opponent unable to retreat can be valuable if they have burned through most of their switching outs or if they have a support Pokémon active. Besides that, it can hit decently hard for the same cost as G-Max Hurricane, which isn’t a bad option to have in a pinch!

2-2 Bronzong - Bronzong is the heart and soul of what makes this deck tick. Attach energy, move energy, protect energy. Almost all of your energy that you put into play will stay in play for the duration of the entire game because you’ll either heal the attackers who will use the energy or move the energy off of Pokémon before they get KOed. Most people will target your Bronzong to ensure your energy stays put on the field, but if they do that, then the Bronzong has immediately served its purpose. Bronzong has low HP and a very horrible attack, so we’ll only really be using this Pokémon for its ability. You can use the Bronzor with the ability that allows you to evolve on the first turn (50HP). Still, I prefer the higher HP Bronzors as it seems Dragapult sees a surge and play, and Max Phantom can OHKO a benched Evolution HP Bronzor with spread damage alone.

1 Zacian V - Having the ability to draw three cards with Intrepid Sword is such a massive strength within any deck. It enables a turn where you would normally pass to become a card drawing opportunity. This is especially valuable when you would normally pass without attacking first; little advantages like this are what wins games! Zacian V is actually able to attack in our deck. However, it is not our main attacker due to its low HP in comparison to Corviknight VMAX. Zacian V is also unable to utilize Cheryl, so be sure to keep that in mind. Solid attacker, solid ability, can’t go wrong! Keep in mind Intrepid Sword can also attach extra energy, meaning we can move them to other attackers via Bronzong.

1 Mewtwo - Mind Report is a lovely ability that reminds me of VS Seeker. Putting additional Cheryl on top of our deck and then finding it with Stellar Wish is unparalleled in terms of strength. It can feel awkward at times to get this Mewtwo’s ability to full fruition, but when it does work, it feels amazing.

2 Cheryl - This is one of the strongest healing cards ever printed, and this deck takes full advantage of it. Moving energy off of our attackers with Bronzong, we can heal our evolution Pokémon without discarding resources, and then after the effect of Cheryl resolves, we can slap the energy back onto Corviknight VMAX. I think this deck may benefit from one or two more copies of Cheryl and perhaps even an Eldegoss V. The main reason why multiple copies of this card are important is so that you can always ensure it is in your hand after a hit from the opponent because when you need to hit a Cheryl, it can be do-or-die!

4 Switch - These really help us to reset a G-Max Hurricane or a Brave Blade. They also allow us the mobility to move Jirachi after a Stellar Wish or get a stranded Bronzong out of the active.

4 Scoop Up Net - Again, these serve a very similar purpose to Switch, except they can clear up bench space for us and help us to spam multiple Stellar Wish in turn. It also allows us to reuse Mewtwo’s ability multiple times in a game for Cheryl, which is very nice!

4 Metal Saucer – I’m unsure if this deck needs four whole copies of this card, but it sure does help the potential to get off a turn two attack from Corviknight VMAX. Metal-type Pokemon don’t have too many tools at their disposal, but this is amongst one of the strongest for sure (and we should take full advantage of it as much as possible). The only awkward thing about this card is, as I’ve said before, once you get energy into play, they will usually stay in play with proper usage of Bronzong’s Metal Trans ability. On the same thought, however, if you miss an attachment, it can be painful, so Metal Saucer helps to smooth any bumps out in the process.

3 Coating Metal Energy - These are excellent for removing our Corviknight’s weakness to Fire-types. We can also move these around with Bronzong, which means we can give the gift of weakness removal to really any Metal-type Pokemon in our deck! This card is vital against the likes of Centiskorch, Baby Blacephalon, and even Reshizard.

I’m sure you’re already running to your computer and loading up your PTCGO Codes as we speak, so I’ll let you hop to it. Corviknight VMAX seems like it got a shot at being the best deck next format once Battle Cry releases, so you might need some more Pokemon Online codes in order to build this deck. This is going to be one of the more expensive decks on PTCGO since the set will be brand new when it drops, so you’re going to need quite a few PTCGO codes to purchase all of your Urshifu Vs as well as VMAXs. Even those Houndooms are going for a lot of packs each, so I’d suggest a large haul of codes if you’re planning on playing this deck.
