“Milking It” - Blissey V / Miltank in Standard

Good morning trainers! Coming off the end of the Regional Championships for the 2022 season, we saw the Astral Radiance set make a huge splash. Amongst the new decks that took place, we saw Regigigas, Palkia VSTAR, and Blissey V take the center stage! Today, we’re going to talk about the nursing Pokémon themselves, Blissey. Buckle up, because this is going to be one crackin’ article!

I booted up my Pokemon Trading Card Game Online app, loaded up some PTCGO codes, and then traded those Pokemon online codes to trade for this Pokemon online deck. I was very excited, and it honestly didn’t take that many Pokemon TCG Online codes to make the deck. Let’s talk about the newest way to play Blissey V!

The main strategy of this Blissey V deck is to get as much energy into the discard pile as possible and attach them using Blissey V’s attack. We play a lot of interesting cards in this deck such as Path to the Peak to slow our opponent down while we can set up our field. Since Blissey has it so much HP we can afford to take a lot of hits from the opponent. This often translates into additional turns where we can draw more prize cards than the opponent. Cards like Miltank and Yveltal also aid us in this strategy because they also help to slow down our opponent in such a fast paced standard format. We use cards like Cape of Toughness in order to extend the HP of our Blissey V. This in return makes our Blissey V army even tougher to take down then before. If the opponent can comfortably knock out our Blissey V even when it has a Cape of Toughness on it, then they deserve the win at that point. The best part? Most decks can’t do this, especially when they don’t have access to their abilities, Special Energy Cards or non-V attackers. If the opponent is ever unable to take a complete knockout on our Blissey, we will have no problem completely healing our Pokémon with cards that we will get into later in this article. The current standard format has so many healing cards to be utilized; it was hard to choose which ones to include in our deck! Let’s take a peek at our deck list for this cool Pokémon.

4 Blissey V - This Pokémon is one of the only attackers in our entire deck, and trust me when I say this: we don’t need anything else other than our Blissey V! Coming in at 250 HP, this tank of a Pokémon is ridiculously hard to take down and can dish out a beating on to our opponent. With a Cape of Toughness attached, we can increase the HP of this Pokemon to 300! Not many Pokémon in the current standard format can hit that much damage, meaning we can take at least 2 to 3 hits without playing any sort of healing cards. Blissey V preys on having energies in the discard pile: we get these energy cards in the discard pile by playing unique cards like Zinnia’s Resolve, or returning energy onto Blissey after a KO has been taken. Keep in mind - unlike VMAX Pokémon, Blissey only gives up two Prize Cards! Meaning our opponent will need to KO three 300 HP beasts in order to win most games. This sounds like an unlikely task; once we get one Blissey loaded with energy, there’s no stopping this monster! Not to mention it can abuse so many unique Special Energy cards (which we will get into later).

1 Radiant Greninja - Our Radiant Pokémon that we’ve chosen to include is no other than Greninja! It can dump energy cards into the discard pile, and help us draw cards. What’s not to love? It has clear synergy with Blissey V, and the only nuance we need to look out for is Path to the Peak. This card finds a nice home in this deck.

1 Tornadus - Blissey is great at KOing Sobbles when using Blissful Blast with a Powerful Colourless Energy attached. In an effort to wipe our opponents’ Sobbles off of the board, we play this Pokémon for its ability. The attack can help to get through opposing Miltank. Tornadus can be helpful for resetting harmful attacks that could be potentially devastating to our deck, such as Flying Pikachu VMAX’s Max Balloon (which prevents damage from Basic Pokémon). Connor Lavelle used this strategy to KO Azul Garcia Griego’s Flying Pikachu VMAX in the 13th round of Milwaukee Regionals.

1 Yveltal - A terror for any deck that has played down too many Special Energy Cards. Double Turbo Energy can power this Pokémon up in a pinch.

1 Dunsparce - This gives us a “fighting” (get it?) chance against Urshifu VMAX.

1 Miltank - I’m going to stop milking all of these puns, but listen: Miltank ain’t no joke! This Pokemon’s Miracle Body ability can put a serious detriment on the opponent’s plans. If they don’t have an out to hit our Miltank, the opponent can very quickly lose the game to a single copy of this card. Rout does enough damage to put pressure on the opponent, especially if they fill up their bench with unnecessary Pokémon. This cow can put such a burden on the opponent that sometimes they run out of resources due to setting up unconventional attackers to hit this Pokémon. A second copy of Miltank could be a serious threat in this deck!

4 Path to the Peak - The most oppressive Stadium in standard, Path can lock up abilities on Rule Box Pokémon. Since we barely play any abilities whatsoever in our deck, this card is effectively a one-sided Stadium that can slow our opponent down from using key abilities like Suicune V’s Fleet Foot, Crobat V’s Dark Ascent, or Arceus VSTAR’s Starbirth ability. Path to the Peak can also be used to bump other popular Stadium cards, like Temple of Sinnoh or Tower of Darkness. Sticking this card down on the first turn of the game can sometimes just shut it down for your opponent, hence why we play four! The only annoying thing is that this can shut down our Radiant Greninja’s ability, but don’t worry - it causes our opponent way more harm than it’ll cause us.

4 Cape of Toughness - A +50 HP buff for our Blissey army is a no brainer, especially in a tanky deck! These help our Blissey stay alive for longer and withstand more hits.

1 Roxanne - This disruptive Supporter can set our opponent back quite a bit, allowing us to catch-up with one stacked Blissey. Time this card perfectly alongside Path to the Peak for big results!

1 Cheren’s Care - I love this card in this deck because it can remove a Blissey V from play so that all we have is a lone Miltank. This can win so many games when pulled off correctly! The least amount of value this Pokémon can provide is by fully healing a Blissey.

4 Powerful Colourless Energy - This is one of the cards that makes Blissey V such a powerful budget deck. This energy allows us to do 20 additional damage to the opponents active Pokémon, and we can always recycle these energies back with our Blissful Blast attack. We play four of this card because we want to do as much extra damage as possible, and we also want to find these as quickly as possible as well.

4 Capture Energy - If you haven’t noticed we don’t really play very many search cards in this deck. Most decks often rely on playing ball cards, however this deck relies also on special energy in the form of Capture Energy. It makes sense to play four of this energy over a fourth Quick Ball because you can recycle these energies back with our attack.

3 Lucky Energy - This energy card proves to be a unique inclusion in to our deck because it allows us to draw cards without the use of a draw Supporter. Lucky Energy can be consistently recycled with our attack - this also means we’ll be drawing many cards throughout the game! This card also ties into the strategy of our deck so well because since our Blisseys will be tanking so many hits, we’ll be able to continuously draw multiple cards at the end of each turn. These also help us recover well after our opponent plays Marnie, and is one of the most important Special Energy cards in our deck. I wish I could find room for a fourth copy!

This deck is one of the most polarizing Pokemon online decks in the standard format, and it really stands a chance most things provided that your opponent doesn’t Marnie you too frequently or have the ability to OHKO you. If you like flexibility with Trainer cards each turn, lots of healing power and the ability to lock your opponent out of games with the Path to the Peak then I highly urge you to try out this deck.
